IT’s happening here

The Irish software industry is not just alive – it’s thriving. Six hundred small to medium-sized indigenous companies are bringing innovative and creative products to the world, while still maintaining the friendly, informal atmosphere for which Irish workplaces are renowned.

There are lots of good reasons to work in an Irish software company. With flat, open organisational structures, you will get many opportunities to have a say. With relatively small workforces, you will have to work at a wide range of tasks, developing your skills in the process. With niche products aimed at an international market, you get to see the results of your input being used worldwide. And with the global reach of these dynamic companies, you get to make a real difference. Oh yes – and because the Irish love the ’craic’, you’ll have lots of fun!

Have your say

If you come to Ireland to work, you will probably book a plane ticket online. Chances are that payment will be processed using software developed by Realex, one of a number of Irish companies providing financial products. Realex is only 12 years old, but in that short time its workforce has grown from two to over 100 people, with offices in Dublin, London and Paris. Because the company is evolving and changing all the time, the workforce has to also, and everyone has a voice. New ideas can be brought to the ‘ringfort’, a set of floor-to-ceiling whiteboards which recall the traditional ringforts of the Burren in the west of Ireland. Tradition meets technology!

Develop your skills

Creating opportunity out of crisis is the sign of an innovative company. A few years ago, Sysnet Global Solutions, an Irish software company, saw that confidence in the credit card industry was being damaged by security breaches and moved its focus to Payment Card Industry Data (PCI) compliance. With a global client base, including the UK, Europe, CIS and the US, the workforce had to more than triple from around 30 to over 100. Sysnet’s diverse array of clients enables developers to work on a wide range of tasks to provide the portal-based solution, allowing them to expand their skills.

See the results

Hunching over a computer screen can be a strain on your eyes, so getting them checked regularly is probably a good idea. Next time you do so, you’ll probably see the optometrist entering your data into a system developed by Ocuco, allowing the optician to provide you with new glasses – should you need them – within an hour. And all possible thanks to an Irish software company which, along with many other Irish software innovators, has created a product now used throughout North America and in Europe.

Make a difference

Innovation is not just about finding new technologies, it’s about finding new ways to exploit technologies. Award-winning Intuition is an Irish software company – just one of a wide range of Irish software companies working in digital technologies – which has taken an established process, e-learning – and brought it to a new level, enabling companies to provide a range of learning activities to its employees via mobile phones and other technologies.
